A battery manufacturer wanted an efficient solution for measuring the impedance of electric vehicle batteries. We look at a state of the art device that is able to test both batteries and individual cells.

Demand for electric vehicles is increasing rapidly and the batteries used in these vehicles are increasing in voltage. Battery manufacturer K had decided to build a new factory to better cater to market demand.

The Problem

The manufacturer did not have an impedance meter capable of testing the new, higher voltage electric vehicle batteries.

Production line manager Mr. W was tasked with building a new production line for electric vehicle batteries. Impedance was an issue. While impedance measurement is an essential part of any new battery production line, manufacturer K did not have any measuring equipment capable of measuring the impedance of the higher-voltage, 600 volt batteries.

“The impedance meters on the existing production line couldn’t be used at voltages above 300V. However, meters used to measure the impedance of electric vehicle battery packs need to be used at 500V, or even 600V. We looked for a suitable meter, but did not find anything that could be used at 300V or above.”─Mr. W

Mr. W kept on researching the meters, even approaching engineering companies. However, he came up empty handed.

Key Aspects of the Problem

  • The manufacturer need to measure the impedance of high-voltage (600V) batteries.
  • It could not find an impedance meter that could be used at above 300V.
